An optical receiver must convert optical signals received through an optical fiber into electrical signals which are accurate and free of distortion. In general, receivers of this type use semiconductor detectors such as photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes. In a conventional photodiode, incoming light of a specified wavelength is absorbed into a semiconductor, such as silicon. The absorbed light generates electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor material. A photocurrent is generated when the created carriers reach an electrical contact. An avalanche photodiode may be coupled to an optical fiber for reception and detection of optical signals. The avalanche photodiode is typically biased at an applied voltage sufficiently high to permit photocurrent multiplication or multiplication by impact ionization. A field effect transistor acts as an amplifier, receiving the generated photocurrent from the photodiode. In operation, light from an optical fiber of a particular wavelength is coupled to the photodiode. The photodiode converts optical energy to a photocurrent. The voltage bias on the photodiode is then increased, and the generated photocurrent becomes the gain of the amplifier. The generated photocurrent is proportional to the power of the light received, and the conversion efficiency of the photodiode. Therefore, the power of the received light is detected using a power meter. In an optical receiver, noise is typically generated by optical cross talk, which may be caused by reflections from an optical fiber, or other optical elements. Optical cross talk is
